 A day course, at the end of which you will be able to train and prune fruit trees. You are encouraged to bring photos of trees/orchards of interest for discussion.

You will need working clothes including work gloves, good secateurs and a pruning saw. Other materials, including trees to be pruned, lunch and hot drinks, are provided.

The course runs on demand in February/March in Kent U.K., or by arrangement elsewhere, once expressions of interest have been received from four people. There are three sessions:

 Session 1. The basics of training and pruning

 Tools and materials

Recognition of fruit buds and wood of different ages

Tree forms and summer pruning; size and vigour

Pruning history, neglected trees, restoration

Techniques of training and pruning

Session 2. The practice of training and pruning

 Use of tools

Practice

 Session 3. Case studies from real life

A discussion of case studies, including the photos that course participants bring along.

Cost

£75 per person, with further tutorial support by arrangement.
